The Good Sister

A few months ago, I worked with a client who happened to be a writer and was having her headshots done for her book.

Drusilla Campbell has her latest book The Good Sister on pre-order.  Check out the link to her book.

We had a wonderful conversation about life while I was getting her hair and makeup done.  She asked me various questions to get to know who I was about what I've experienced; something she likes to do.  She usually gets a spark of an idea from what she hears.  She gets her inspiration from the people she meets and the stories she listens to.

It was a pleasure spending the morning with her.

Laborless Summer

As we celebrate Labor Day today, we also say "good-bye" to the care-free times of summer as we get ready for the smell of apple pies, pumpkin muffins and sipping on some Pumpkin-spiced lattes.  Autumn is soon arriving.

Well looking back at my summer, it has definitely been less work and more play as I took some time from makeup artistry to spend a summer full of various celebrations and vacation trips.  We opened up summer by celebrating my grandma's 90th birthday.  She was able to celebrate the many blessings in her life...she has birthed 12 children and has over 30 grandchildren, not to mention all the little great grandchildren we can no longer keep a count of!  How amazing it is that she can live to see her great grandchildren and still be able to enjoy their company.

Don't let her sweet face fool you, my grandma is a witty woman who has survived a rough life in the Philippines, hard labor in her 60's, and has now outlived her husband.  We may not know how many more birthdays we will be celebrating with her, but we do know that she has touched each and every one of our lives by being such a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother!

I couldn't let my grandma celebrate her birthday without getting all dolled up, now could I?

Happy 90th Birthday, grandma!

Beauty tip:  With mature skin, the tendency is to pile on the makeup to cover any signs of aging.  But actually,  the more makeup that's on, the more noticeable it will be.  Appropriate concealers and foundation stick to cover-up age spots, eyeliner applied close to the upper lash line, brush on some color onto the cheeks  and a gloss with a hint of color applied to the lips will give a more youthful look.

Makeup Monday: Twilight Saga - Eclipse

Okay if you know me, you know I ABOLUTELY LOVE the Twilight Saga!!  I am so excited to see the premiere the next installment of the Twilight series, Eclipse...I have a bunch of girlfriends who share the same passion.  Us Twi-moms are celebrating in style with a Twilight marathon, a premiere party and midnight showing.  What team are you on Team Edward or Team Jacob?

Well in celebration of the new movie, Nordstrom has come out with their second line of Twilight collections.  One of these is the Luna Twilight  makeup collection featuring palletes, lip venom, and body glow to name a few.

For about $34.00 and under, you can have a piece of Twilight and create your own vampire looks!

The palette comes full with blush, shadow and lip color.  There are a variety of sets available themed after your favorite characters from Twilight: Bella, Alice, Rosalie to name a few.

DuWop Lip Venom is a lip stain that lasts giving you that "just ate" look.

The Femme Fatale lip gloss is my personal favorite.  The variety of colors are fun offering some with shimmers and metallics.  LOVE!

The Body Glow. You can be a part of the Cullen clan when applying this product that offers a glisttening effect.

These products are now available for presale online at Nordstroms. And available in stores June 4th!

Lani & Her Gals

I remember receiving a phone call from Lani about getting her hair & makeup done for herself and two bridesmaids.  She travelled from Los Angeles to have her consultation with me with her gal pal Czarina.  The energy they both had was refreshing.  We were able to chat like we've known each other for years, and I loved that about them!!  Lani exuded elegance and warmth which fit the Old Hollywood Glam-inspired makeup we were going for.

Lani spoke kindly of her fiance.  Sort of giddy.  Like after many years of looking, she finally found the one she was waiting for.  She has lots of family living in San Diego, she couldn't resist having her wedding in the finest city. She and her fiance decided to go out typcial San Diego style and have their reception and ceremony on board the San Diego Hornblower cruising along the bay.

I had a great time spending the morning with Lani and her gals.  She is very lucky to have such beautiful and warm-hearted friends to accompany her!  Congratulations Lani & David!!!

The Look:  Lani wanted something classy.  So she opted for an Old Hollywood Glamour-inspired look.

With a strapless dress, a chignon was a perfect fit.  It's simple, and leaves interest for both the front and back view of the bride.

Lani's wedding color was a deep red.  So to keep the focus on her I applied a brick-red lipstick with thick black liner to balance the face.

The Butterfly Effect Fashion Show

Earlier I had mentioned that Jeannie Makeup Artistry would be donating services to the Butterfly Effect Fashion Show benefitting the Jenna Druck Foundation...the experience was absolutely amazing!  It's great to be amongst such wonderful talents; from hairstylists, MUA's, stylists, models and of course the designers.

I worked alongside two other MUA's (one being a dear friend Momi Gonzalez) for local designer Jose Maria and  Project Runway: Season 6 designer Christopher (not Chris) Straub.  Jai Rodriguez was the event's emcee.

Triax Associates were responsible for putting the event together for the foundation.  It was surprisely well run considering there were four designers showcasing their Fall 2010 collections, and LOTS of people backstage who have donated their time to good cause.

The people were so wonderful to work with which made the experience even more so memorable.  Congrats to the Jenna Druck Foundation for a fabulous and successful event!!!

A Day with Amy

Jeannie Makeup Artistry had the pleasure to spend a day with Amy Marsalis doing hair & makeup for her zed card shoot in Coronado.  Amy is a successful voice actress from the midwest and recently moved to San Diego and decided to take her chances in front of the camera as an actress being so close to LA.

I got the chance to get to know her a little.  She's a wife & mom pursuing her dream yet trying to find a way to balance them all.  (Aren't we all?)  Her beautiful green eyes captures who she is on the inside, warm and exuberant.

The Look:  Using browns around the eyes with a toned down lip color pulls the green in her eyes making them hard to miss.  Hair was fixed to frame the eyes giving them even more attention.

Princess Diva Soiree

Jeannie Makeup Artistry had the privilage to do-up some of youngest divas yet.  These little princesses were treated to a glitterfied updo & shimmery lipgloss topped with their very own tiara!

Even little girls can be treated to a makeover.  It doesn't take much time and they don't even need much makeup!

The Look:  It takes only 5 minutes to pull off a princess diva look.
Princess Hair: Pull hair in a pony tale.  Curl ends and pin on top of the crown of the head and spray with glitter spray.  Princess Makeup:  Little girls need to look like little girls, just add a favorite shimmery gloss to an already adorable face!

Natural Beauty

On a Friday afternoon, Jeannie Makeup Artistry was there for Gianna's photoshoot.  The great Robert Dahey was the photographer. Gianna is an aspiring model.  She's seventeen and has already graduated high school a semester early.  I found it amazing that this young lady has so many aspirations.  She sat in the chair a little shy, but when she was in front of the camera, she worked it!!  She's well put together and her looks are versatile.

I had a great day with the team.  Fun times!!

For more photos of Gianna check, out  Jeannie Makeup Artistry.

Her look:  Natural.  I used browns on the eyes, light blush.  She has gorgeous full lips, so a natural color or nude works best for her.  It plays down the lips and balances out the face.

Makeup Monday: Coverage-on-the-Run

Need some type of coverage, but don't have enough time?  For everyday wear, try a tinted moisturizer.  The name is self-explanatory; it's a moisturizer that is tinted the color of various skin tones. It provides moisture as a moisturizer and coverage as a foundation.  It's two steps cut down to one.  Tinted moisturizers come in various shades to provide just the right coverage for you.  It's perfect for the on-the-go woman who can use the coverage, but can't afford the time.

Robert Dahey Photography Photoshoot

Yesterday I had the opportunity to do makeup for a test shoot at Wheel Works studio in downtown.  Pretty crazy, but very exciting.  This shoot was also an opportunity for aspiring hair stylists to use inspiration into their hair creations.  There were lots of people involved from models, hairstylists, wardrobe stylists, makeup artists, assistants, and photographers to pull off a successful shoot.  We all contributed our talents to add some work to our portfolios.

Robert Dahey is a true photographic genius.  He has such a great eye and has inspired me to get more involved in fashion makeup.  To top it off, he truly is a really nice guy.  This was the first time working with Robert, and I hope to work with him more on future projects.

I'd have to say working with all the talented people was a wonderful experience.  Everyone was very professional and nice.  I think fashion is definitely a niche I would like to pursue!

Some behind-the-scenes photos from my personal camera, actual photos soon to come.
